On the Radar: Upcoming publications featuring emerge

A quick note on some upcoming publications that will be featuring the forward thinking of Emerge Digital:

RadioandRecords.com

Radio and Records

What does major market radio and emerging media have in common? More than you think!

Thanks so much to Mike Stern at Radio and Records — the radio industry bible — for taking the time out of his day to talk about the opportunities radio stations have right in front of them to increase their digital presence.

It is such a small world. I never thought that I would meet another soul who knew of Gonzo Greg’s Rock N’ Roll Rubber Room. And yet, here we were on the phone. Mike was extremely nice and knowledgeable. I’m looking forward to see what ends up on the page.

His article should be hitting the Web and station mailboxes across the country in about a week.

imediaconnection.com

iMediaConnection

My next article on how brands can get good lift from widgets and mini-applications is now making its way through the editorial process, and will be appearing in iMediaConnection’s Desktop Applications section. Thanks as always to Gretchen Hyman, editor extraordinaire.

Of course, both articles will also appear here on the New Media Buzz — so check back, y’hear?

One Last Poem For Poetry Month

Burning_down_house

I couldn’t let poetry month end without tossing one more out onto the blog. I thought about Emily Dickinson, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or Elizabeth Bishop. All of them are favorites, and well worth looking into if you’re not familiar with their work. But in the end, I couldn’t get away from posting another Billy Collins favorite The Best Cigarette.

Collins is now an ex-smoker, but I think this poem captures not only what smoking writers find so appealing about the combination of addictions; it also feels to me like a great post-modern look upon the conflicts of industry and personal freedom that poets like Blake and Dickinson wrote so eloquently and emotionally about.

The first stanza always reminds me of the Talking Heads’ video for Burning Down the House.

The Best Cigarette

There are many that I miss
having sent my last one out a car window
sparking along the road one night, years ago.

The heralded one, of course:
after sex, the two glowing tips
now the lights of a single ship;
at the end of a long dinner
with more wine to come
and a smoke ring coasting into the chandelier;
or on a white beach,
holding one with fingers still wet from a swim.

How bittersweet these punctuations
of flame and gesture;
but the best were on those mornings
when I would have a little something going
in the typewriter,
the sun bright in the windows,
maybe some Berlioz on in the background.
I would go into the kitchen for coffee
and on the way back to the page,
curled in its roller,
I would light one up and feel
its dry rush mix with the dark taste of coffee.

Then I would be my own locomotive,
trailing behind me as I returned to work
little puffs of smoke,
indicators of progress,
signs of industry and thought,
the signal that told the nineteenth century
it was moving forward.
That was the best cigarette,
when I would steam into the study
full of vaporous hope
and stand there,
the big headlamp of my face
pointed down at all the words in parallel lines.

A Perspective on Blogging: Our First Two Months

Share_newe_media_buzz

As we round the corner on our first two months having a Blog at Emerge, I wanted to take the opportunity to share our statistics back with you, our readers, to complete the communications cycle. What works, what doesn’t, and how the view looks from the 688,970 most popular blog according to Technorati.

Let’s start with the top-line numbers and work our way to the 10 most and least popular articles so far.

Over the last eight weeks, according to Google Analytics, our blog has been visited 4,695 times, with 3,948 unique visits and an average time on the site of 2 minutes 35 seconds. On average, visitors look at 1.53 pages per visit, which is a statistic I hope will continue to grow over the coming months.

Though you may post a comment to the contrary, this feels good to me, as we’re just trying to hand out as many pink spoons as we can, and hope that you like an article enough to come back for more. We’ve been averaging about 46 visitors a day, which may seem paltry to the other 688,969 bloggers out there, but I’m of the mind that even if only 5 people enjoy what we’re putting out there, all the better.

Now, on to the prizes and surprises of our top (and bottom) 10 according to total pageviews….

Join us at WidgetWebExpo

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be presenting What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? What does a widget campaign look like from an agency perspective at this year’s WidgetWebExpo in NYC this June 16 and 17. Here’s the description:

How can agencies make widgets work for their clients? It’s part business solution, part campaign, and all about serving the user from the utility of the brand. Michael Leis, VP Strategic Services of Emerge Digital will discuss how agencies can successfully position a widget or mini-application strategy, using the brand as a platform (reaching out) instead of a funnel (pulling in). What results is the ability to tell a deeper, more engaging brand story over time and space that both users and brands will be thanking you for.

It’s shaping to live up to the hype created by the previous WWE’s (not to be confused with the wrestling circuit). With the excellent location, I’m really looking forward to connecting with the forward thinkers in today’s widget space — it’s a promising lineup you should check out.

For those of you who can’t make it out to the Brooklyn Bridge (now there’s an idea for an old micropayment scam updated for Web 2.0 :) ), I’ll do my best to relay the happenings from the conference here in the New Media Buzz.

Otherwise, I look forward to meeting you there!
